Eleven people were shot and another was injured while fleeing gunfire near Florida A&M University’s football stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday night, police said.
Six adults and six minors were among the 12 people injured in the Tallahassee shooting. Six shooting victims remained hospitalized Sunday morning, including one in critical condition, and five had been discharged, according to WCTV.
Officers responded shortly before 8 p.m. on October 24 near Perry and Manatee streets, close to Bragg Memorial Stadium. Crowds had gathered in the area during the university’s homecoming weekend.
Police said preliminary findings indicated that a fight preceded the gunfire. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday morning, and investigators were working to identify those responsible, The Associated Press reported.
Police Chief Lawrence Revell said the youngest victim was 11. The person injured while escaping was a grandmother, he told reporters, according to WCTV.
The shooting followed Florida A&M’s homecoming football game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Authorities had not established whether the gunfire was connected to the game.
In a social media update, the university said its campus remained safe and urged people to avoid the affected area while police investigated.
Detectives from the Tallahassee Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit worked overnight reviewing digital evidence and following leads. Officers continued collecting physical evidence at the scene Sunday, WCTV reported.
Police asked witnesses to share information, photographs and videos through a dedicated tip line at 850-891-4610 or the department’s evidence submission portal. People wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS.
