Rep. Ilhan Omar is being represented by Amy Jeffress, a lawyer who has served as former President Joe Biden’s personal attorney, as she challenges a federal investigation into her immigration history.
Jeffress and fellow Hecker Fink attorney Joshua Matz are handling the Minnesota Democrat’s defense, the New York Post reported on Oct. 24.
Their involvement was already public before that report. The two lawyers signed an Oct. 16 letter seeking the return of property taken from Omar’s Washington home, according to The Associated Press.
They also sought preservation of search recordings and alleged that investigators had breached conditions set by the judge. The Justice Department disputed their account and said its personnel followed the court’s requirements.
The investigation concerns possible inaccuracies or fraud in her family’s immigration records. Homeland Security Investigations searched her Washington residence on Oct. 12.
Her attorneys reject the inquiry as politically driven and say there is no valid basis to challenge her citizenship. Omar denies wrongdoing and is presumed innocent. No criminal charges against her have been publicly announced.
Jeffress became Biden’s personal attorney in 2025, the Post reported. Matz served as impeachment counsel to House Democrats during proceedings against Donald Trump, a role recorded in a congressional announcement.
The lawyers’ Oct. 16 letter also requested that officials retain records of the search, including audio and video, as CBS News reported.
