Elon Musk warned Democrats on Wednesday that he would go after whoever is behind any investigation of him or his companies if the party wins power in Congress in next month’s midterm elections.
“Live by the sword, die by the sword,” Musk wrote on X on Oct. 21.
“Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets,” he added, Fox Business reported. He did not say what form that would take.
What Democrats are weighing
Musk was responding to a Politico report that Democrats have discussed ways to investigate him and his businesses, including Tesla and SpaceX, if they take control of one or both chambers of Congress.
Possible areas include his work with the Department of Government Efficiency, federal contracts held by his companies and alleged conflicts of interest, Fox Business reported.
Musk’s companies have also faced recent questions in Washington, including over a slowdown of Starlink service in Ukraine that Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the administration did not request.
Committee majorities would give Democrats the power to open inquiries and compel testimony. Republicans now control both the House and the Senate.
Elon Musk’s role in Washington
Musk was one of the biggest backers of President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign and later led the government cost-cutting push known as DOGE. He left that role in late May 2025, when his time as a special government employee ran out.
The federal workforce shrank by about 250,000 employees during 2025, according to the Government Accountability Office, with DOGE contributing to the cuts.
No investigation has been opened. Americans vote in the midterm elections on Nov. 3.
