President Donald Trump said the United States is “close” to finalizing a new trade deal with India that will strengthen the economic and strategic ties between the two countries.
Speaking from the Oval Office during the swearing-in of Sergio Gor as US Ambassador to India, Trump said, “We are getting a fair deal, just a fair trade deal. We are getting a deal with India, a very different deal than we have had before.” According to The Indian Express.
Key points in the draft deal are said to include increasing U.S. energy exports to India and expanding investment by Indian companies in U.S. manufacturing and infrastructure. Trump also suggested that tariffs on Indian goods would be reduced “at some point,” noting that India had reduced its purchases of Russian oil.
On the Indian side, government officials said that negotiations are at an advanced stage, with work already underway on the legal text of the bilateral agreement. They noted that they do not currently expect new trade rounds and are awaiting the US response to India’s proposal.
Analysts say the emerging deal highlights India’s growing role as a strategic partner for the United States in the Indo-Pacific region and reflects Washington’s focus on bilateral trade relations. However, the specific timetable and detailed terms have not been disclosed.
