Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday called on Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or face impeachment, accusing her of misleading the public over a fatal shooting during federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota.

In a video posted on the social platform X, the Massachusetts Democrat said Congress should act if Noem does not step down.

“Kristi Noem should resign, and if she doesn’t, Congress should impeach her and remove her from office. In America, we still believe in accountability, not lies,” Warren said.

Warren’s comments come amid heightened scrutiny of the Department of Homeland Security’s role in immigration enforcement actions across Minnesota and other states. The senator accused Noem of lying about the circumstances surrounding the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident and intensive care nurse, who was fatally shot by a Border Patrol agent during a demonstration against immigration enforcement earlier this month.

DHS officials initially said Pretti posed a threat to federal officers. Warren and other critics dispute that account, citing bystander video footage that they say contradicts claims that Pretti intended to harm law enforcement. Pretti was licensed to carry a concealed firearm, according to authorities.

“Donald Trump and Kristi Noem think that they can tell you what to believe,” Warren said. “They think you will believe them instead of your own eyes. Don’t roll over for a lie. These lies have to stop.”

Warren called for a “full, independent investigation” and said any wrongdoing should be prosecuted.

In response, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia Laughlin said in a statement that the department is enforcing existing laws.

“DHS enforces the laws Congress passes, period,” Laughlin said. She added that ICE officers have faced a sharp increase in assaults and criticized lawmakers who, she said, attack federal agents rather than focus on public safety..
