Two men have been charged with federal terror-related offences after authorities said they attempted to detonate homemade explosive devices outside Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Prosecutors identified the suspects as Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, who were arrested after police said they threw explosive devices during a protest near the mayor’s residence on Saturday.

Authorities said the devices failed to detonate as intended and no injuries were reported.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said investigators believe the suspects were inspired by propaganda from the Islamic State (IS) group.

Officials said the men are facing charges including attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization and using a weapon of mass destruction.

Police said officers later found a third improvised explosive device inside a vehicle connected to the suspects.

Authorities said the devices contained volatile homemade explosive material and could have caused serious casualties if they had detonated.

A federal judge ordered both suspects to remain in custody until their next court hearing scheduled for April 8, as investigators continue examining evidence related to the incident.
