President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday night, declaring that the United States is entering a “golden age” and arguing that the “revolution that began in 1776 has not ended.”
Speaking before Congress, Trump outlined priorities on border security, the economy and crime, while highlighting guests he said symbolized the country’s spirit.
The president said illegal crossings had dropped sharply and claimed fentanyl flows were down, adding that gas prices had fallen in parts of the country and that business investment commitments had surged during his term.
He also pointed to reductions in food stamp rolls and reiterated his opposition to diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Trump praised military veterans and victims’ families, including honoring a World War II veteran nearing 100 and recognizing relatives of crime victims.
On health care, Trump criticized the Affordable Care Act, urged greater price transparency, and promoted a federal website he said helps lower drug costs.
He called on Congress to pass a ban on insider trading by lawmakers and proposed allowing Americans to receive government-style matching contributions for retirement accounts. He closed by urging lawmakers to see the moment as part of a continuing American experiment in liberty, according to his remarks.
