Stephen Hawking is mentioned at least 232 times in documents contained within the latest tranche of so called “Epstein files,” according to a review of the materials released as part of ongoing court proceedings and disclosures tied to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The references, which appear across emails, contact lists, travel records and internal communications, do not allege wrongdoing by the late theoretical physicist.
Instead, they largely reflect Epstein’s extensive efforts to associate himself with high-profile academics, scientists and public figures in order to bolster his credibility and influence.
Hawking, who died in 2018, had professional interactions with Epstein connected to scientific conferences and academic gatherings, including events linked to theoretical physics and cosmology.
Epstein was known to fund and host elite intellectual forums, using those connections to gain access to prominent figures in science, politics and business.
Legal experts and investigators reviewing the files have emphasized that repeated mentions of an individual’s name do not imply criminal conduct. “Being referenced in Epstein’s records does not, by itself, indicate participation in illegal activity,” one legal analyst said, noting that Epstein kept extensive documentation on people he sought to impress or associate with.
The renewed attention follows the Justice Department’s recent release of additional Epstein-related documents, which has sparked fresh scrutiny of Epstein’s network and renewed calls from lawmakers and advocacy groups for transparency.
Epstein died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, a case that continues to reverberate years later as more records become public.
