Six American service members were killed after an Iranian missile struck a U.S. military facility in Kuwait, U.S. officials confirmed Monday, marking the deadliest known attack on American forces since the conflict with Iran escalated.
U.S. Central Command initially reported three deaths but later said the toll rose to six after one wounded soldier died and two additional bodies were recovered from the rubble.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that a U.S. bunker in Kuwait was hit when a missile launched during Iran’s retaliation penetrated air defenses.
Hegseth said a “powerful weapon” struck a “tactical operations centre that was fortified,” though he did not provide further details about the site.
U.S. officials told CBS News the personnel were working in a makeshift office area protected by reinforced concrete barriers.
More than 13,000 American troops are stationed in Kuwait as part of long-standing defense cooperation. Iran has launched missiles at several Gulf states allied with the U.S. in response to recent strikes.
Separately, the U.S. confirmed three fighter jets were lost in what it described as friendly fire. All pilots ejected safely. Iranian state media claimed responsibility, though no evidence was provided.
