New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani plans to establish a “Mayor’s Office of Mass Engagement,” allocating about $1.6 million for staff salaries, according to city job postings and officials familiar with the plan.

The office is expected to hire around 14 staff members, including campaign directors, borough leads and community liaisons, tasked with coordinating volunteer efforts and increasing public participation in city programs. Salaries for most roles range from about $140,000 to $150,000, while some positions are listed lower.

City officials said the initiative aims to expand outreach through town halls, training sessions and community campaigns designed to connect residents with local government and policy initiatives.

The move comes as the city faces a budget gap estimated at more than $5 billion, prompting discussions between city and state leaders on potential measures, including tax changes and spending adjustments.

Critics, including some political strategists, questioned the timing and purpose of the initiative, while supporters argue it could improve civic engagement and strengthen communication between City Hall and residents.

Officials said the scope of the office could evolve over time, with further decisions expected as budget negotiations continue.
