Iran has postponed the state funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as U.S. and Israeli airstrikes continue across the country, officials said.

Iranian state television said the ceremony, originally planned in Tehran, was delayed due to expectations of an “unprecedented turnout” of mourners and logistical challenges during the ongoing conflict.

Officials said a new date for the funeral will be announced later.

Khamenei, who led Iran since 1989, was killed in a major strike in Tehran carried out during a joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign targeting Iranian leadership and military infrastructure.

His death has triggered a nationwide mourning period and a complex political transition as Iran prepares to choose a new supreme leader.

The postponement comes as hostilities continue to intensify. Israeli forces have carried out repeated airstrikes across Iran, while Tehran has responded with missile and drone attacks against U.S. and allied targets in the region.

The conflict has caused heavy casualties and heightened fears of a wider Middle East war.

Attention is now turning to Iran’s leadership succession, with the country’s Assembly of Experts expected to select a new supreme leader in the coming days amid the ongoing military confrontation.
