Greenland residents have expressed growing concern about President Donald Trump’s newfound interest in the island’s mineral resources,
With community leaders warning that the economic ambitions will not benefit the locals or the environment.
Several Greenlanders said they fear that external pressure to accelerate mining projects could disrupt traditional livelihoods and fragile ecosystems, calling on U.S. leaders to act with caution and respect. “I hope they show humanity,” said one resident, reflecting the unrest in parts of the island.
Greenland’s government has previously stressed that any resource development must be led on its own terms, balancing economic opportunity with environmental protection and the rights of Indigenous communities.
Officials have reiterated that decisions about mining and land use remain a matter of Greenlandic sovereignty.
The comments come as Trump has publicly highlighted Greenland’s strategic and economic importance, reviving debate over how global powers view the Arctic region and how local populations may be affected by growing international interest.
