GOP Sees Opening in NYC Mayor’s Property Tax Proposal

Republicans are seizing on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s proposal to raise property taxes as a political opening ahead of the midterms, arguing the plan reinforces a narrative that Democrats are out of touch with affordability concerns facing middle-income voters.

Mamdani proposed a 9.5% property tax increase as a “last resort” to help close a projected $5.4 billion budget shortfall over two years, while urging New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to back a wealth tax on high earners.

Hochul has rejected both options, saying she opposes raising taxes and driving residents out of the state.

Republican strategists say the proposal gives the GOP a national talking point against progressive Democrats, while some Democratic operatives warn it could put centrist candidates, including Hochul, in a difficult political position.

Others argue Hochul can use the moment to reinforce her image as a moderate focused on affordability.
