Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville called on U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota to leave the Democratic Party, criticizing comments he said alienate white male voters, according to remarks he made during a recent podcast interview.
Carville said attacking white men politically is a mistake because they make up a significant portion of the electorate. “About 33% of the people that are gonna vote are gonna be White males… Well, it’s stupid to attack 33% of the voters!” he said while discussing Democratic election strategy.
The longtime strategist suggested Omar should start her own political movement instead of remaining within the Democratic coalition if she holds those views.
His criticism relates to past remarks by Omar in which she said the U.S. should be “more fearful of white men,” comments that have resurfaced in recent political debate.
Carville argued that winning national elections requires support from white voters, especially white men, warning that writing off such a large voting bloc would be “mathematical insanity,” according to his comments on the program.
