Pentagon weighs potential ground operation in Iran

The Pentagon is reviewing plans for a possible ground operation in Iran that could involve thousands of U.S. troops, according to a report by The Washington Post.

Officials said the planning focuses on limited missions rather than a full-scale invasion.

The USS Tripoli has moved into the region carrying about 3,500 personnel, including roughly 2,500 Marines.

Officials said any operation could target oil infrastructure or secure nuclear-related sites, using a mix of conventional and special operations forces.

U.S. officials indicated the potential missions could last several weeks, though timelines may extend depending on conditions on the ground.

The planning comes as Washington continues to increase its military presence in the Middle East amid ongoing conflict with Iran.

President Donald Trump said last week he was not currently deploying ground troops, while leaving open the possibility of future action.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said military preparations are intended to provide options and do not signal a final decision.

Officials said the situation remains under review, with both military and diplomatic paths being considered as tensions continue in the region.
