Former U.S. Representative Melissa Bean is projected to win the Democratic primary for a congressional seat in Illinois, positioning herself for a return to Congress after more than a decade, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Bean previously represented an earlier version of Illinois’s 8th Congressional District before losing her reelection bid in 2010. She secured the nomination after defeating tech entrepreneur Junaid Ahmed in Tuesday’s primary race.

The seat became open after incumbent Raja Krishnamoorthi chose to run for the U.S. Senate, aiming to succeed retiring Senator Dick Durbin. The race is part of broader changes within Illinois’s Democratic delegation ahead of upcoming midterm elections.

In a statement following her projected victory, Bean said she was “humbled” and described the result as a step toward “rebuilding the American Dream” and delivering for constituents.

Top Democrats welcomed the outcome, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries congratulating Bean and expressing confidence in her return to Congress.

Political analysts say the district is strongly Democratic, making Bean the clear favorite to win the general election and complete her political comeback.
