China has urged the United States to immediately cease interference in Cuba’s internal affairs, calling on Washington to respect Cuban sovereignty and halt economic and diplomatic pressure, officials said.
In a statement released through China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Beijing said it opposes “unilateral coercive measures, threats and attempts to influence the domestic affairs of Cuba.” Chinese spokespeople added that foreign intervention in another nation’s internal matters only heightens tensions and undermines peaceful relations.
China’s remarks follow heightened U.S. pressure on Havana, including tariff threats and sanctions tied to broader tensions over energy, regional politics and geopolitical alignment. Officials in Beijing positioned their statement as support for a fellow developing nation facing external pressure.
“We call on all countries to respect sovereignty, not to support policies that harm the legitimate rights of others, and to work toward dialogue rather than confrontation,” the Chinese foreign ministry said. While China did not specify any particular proposed U.S. policies, its statement reiterated longstanding diplomatic principles about non-interference and peaceful coexistence.
Cuba and China have maintained diplomatic and economic relations for decades, and China has opposed U.S. sanctions on Havana in international forums in the past. Beijing’s message underscores its continuing stance against what it considers coercive foreign policy measures and reflects broader strategic competition with the United States on influence in the Western Hemisphere.
U.S. officials have not immediately responded to China’s call, but a spokesperson for the State Department said Washington’s position on Cuba is shaped by human rights concerns and regional security considerations.
