The FBI said it is not aware of any continued communication between the Guthrie family and suspected kidnappers as a reported ransom deadline passed in the search for Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing for more than a week.
In a statement obtained by NewsNation, the bureau said agents, analysts and support staff have been working around the clock to reunite the 84 year old with her family.
The FBI said it has not identified a suspect or person of interest and that additional personnel are being deployed to Tucson to assist the investigation.
Local station KGUN reported obtaining a note demanding $6 million in Bitcoin and threatening harm if payment was not made by Monday at 5 p.m. MST. Authorities have not confirmed details of the note, saying they are following all leads.
Guthrie, the mother of NBC News “TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home near Tucson on Jan. 31. The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department are jointly leading the investigation and operating a 24 hour command post with crisis management and analytic teams. The bureau urged the public to share any information that could help locate her.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have released multiple public appeals for their mother’s safe return and said they are willing to do whatever is necessary to secure her release as the search enters its second week.
