DNNPOST 07/02/2026 Former Vice President Kamala Harris accused the White House and President Donald Trump of a cover-up after officials said a staffer was responsible for posting and then deleting a video that depicted former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes.

Harris wrote on X that, “No one believes this cover up from the White House, especially since they originally defended the post,” adding that the incident reflected what she said were Trump’s beliefs. The White House said a “staffer erroneously made the post” and removed the video after criticism. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt initially described the clip as an “internet meme” before it was taken down.

The video, which circulated briefly on official channels, portrayed several political figures as animals, with Trump shown as a lion and other leaders bowing before him. The Obamas appeared at the end of the clip depicted as apes.

The content prompted bipartisan condemnation, with Republican Sen. Tim Scott calling the depiction “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.”

Trump said he had only seen the beginning of the video and said he condemned the depiction, but he did not apologize and said he did not personally post it.

He said the objectionable content appeared at the end and suggested it would have been removed sooner if staff had reviewed it fully.

Democratic leaders denounced the video. Sen. Bernie Sanders called it “disgustingly racist,” while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said it was posted “intentionally” and urged Republican leaders to condemn the incident.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office also criticized the post, highlighting concerns about accountability for those involved.
