DNNPOST 06/02/2026:House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair James Comer said it is, highly likely his panel would subpoena Bill Gates if the Microsoft co-founder declines to cooperate with requests for information tied to the committee’s review of records connected to Jeffrey Epstein.
Speaking in a television interview, Comer said it was a “pretty good bet” Gates would be asked to answer questions and outlined the committee’s typical approach to subpoenas.
He said, “You don’t just issue a subpoena on Day 1, you invite someone to come in,” adding that interest from members of both parties and recent public comments had increased pressure for the committee to seek Gates’s cooperation. He added, “If he refuses to come in, I think a subpoena is highly likely.”
The comments followed the release of Justice Department records that included emails attributed to Epstein mentioning Gates. The emails contain disputed claims about personal matters. Gates has not been accused of wrongdoing by Epstein’s victims, and the appearance of his name in the records does not imply criminal conduct.
A spokesperson for Gates described the allegations attributed to Epstein as “absolutely absurd and completely false,” saying the documents reflected Epstein’s frustration at not maintaining a relationship with Gates.
Gates said in a separate interview that he regretted any contact with Epstein, saying, “Every minute I spent with him, I regret, and I apologize that I did that.”
He said the email attributed to Epstein was never sent and that its contents were false, adding that he did not visit Epstein’s island and that their interactions were limited to discussions about philanthropy.
Rep. Nancy Mace publicly urged Comer to subpoena Gates. Melinda French Gates said on an NPR podcast that any remaining questions should be answered by those named in the records, including her former husband, saying, “They need to answer to those things, not me.”
