MSNBC Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough criticized Democrats Party strategy this week, calling recent social media activity by California Governor Gavin Newsom embarrassing and evidence the party has lost focus.
Scarborough argued Democrats are struggling to connect with voters, focusing too much on former President Donald Trump instead of addressing core economic issues. His comments followed a series of Trump-style posts on Newsom’s official press account.
The television host advised Democrats to move away from constant Trump attacks and prioritize “kitchen table” concerns such as affordability, grocery prices, housing, and rising energy costs.
Newsom’s unconventional posts included mocking Trump with food-related nicknames like “Donald Taco Trump,” joking about his stamina and age, and suggesting he uses smaller stairs on Air Force One. In another post, Newsom claimed he deserved a Nobel Peace Prize for designing “the most incredible maps in the history of mapping,” which he said could end rigged elections and return power to the people.
Scarborough warned Democracts not to make Trump the centerpiece of their strategy, noting he will not be on ballots in 2026 or 2028. Using boxing metaphors, he urged the party to focus on immediate political opponents and speak directly to voters with practical solutions.
He pointed to recent comments from New Jersey congressman about rising energy costs as example of effective, voter-focused messaging.
Scarborough’s critique highlights broader concerns within the Democratic Party about its messaging following recent electoral setbacks. Newsom’s social media approach reflects a shift toward provocative, Trump-like communication rather than traditional political messaging.
